Implants in Antalya: one trip or two?
The implant has to become part of your jaw before it can carry a permanent tooth. That takes time, and usually means two visits.
Most single implants and implant bridges need two trips: the first to place the implant, the second a few months later to fit the abutment and final crown or bridge once the implant has fused with the bone. Full-arch treatment often fits fixed temporary teeth on the first trip. Your dentist sets the gap after surgery.
Patients sometimes hope to fly out with a gap and fly home with a finished tooth. For crowns and veneers that is realistic. For implants it usually is not. Here is why, and how to plan around it.
What happens to an implant after it is placed
An implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone. Over the following months the bone grows tightly around it, a process dentists call osseointegration. Until that has happened, the implant is not ready to take the full force of biting. The NHS notes that the replacement parts also take time to prepare because they need to fit your mouth properly.
The usual two-trip pattern
Trip one
- Examination and 3D (CBCT) scan.
- Final plan and price.
- Extractions, if needed.
- Implant placement, sometimes with a bone graft.
- A check a few days later before you fly.
At Precious Dental, this visit includes four hotel nights.
Between trips
Usually a few months at home. You may have a temporary tooth or denture. Follow the cleaning and diet instructions, and contact the clinic if anything worries you.
Trip two
- Check that the implant has fused.
- Abutment fitted.
- Scan or impressions for the final crown or bridge.
- Fitting and bite adjustments.
At Precious Dental, this visit includes five hotel nights.
What decides the gap
- The quality and amount of bone.
- Whether a bone graft or sinus lift was needed; these can lengthen healing.
- Upper or lower jaw.
- Your general health, including smoking and diabetes.
Your dentist will give you a target window after surgery. Do not book the second flight until the clinic agrees the dates.
Full-arch treatment is different
With All-on-4 and All-on-6, several implants are placed together and joined by a bridge. Because they support each other, many clinics fit fixed temporary teeth on the first trip, so you leave with teeth. The final bridge is made on the second trip. See the full-arch ranking.
Temporary teeth between trips
For a missing front tooth, ask what you will wear in between: a small removable denture, a bonded temporary, or something else. For back teeth, some people manage without. Ask the clinic in advance, so there are no surprises.
Planning the two dates
- Think about both trips before booking the first.
- Check the weather and holidays for both; see the best time of year.
- Ask whether the package and its hotel nights cover both trips.
- Ask what happens if you cannot make the planned second trip on time.
- Keep the implant brand and size in writing from trip one.
Is two trips worth it?
For several implants, or implants plus other work, usually yes. For one implant the sums are closer; see a single implant in Antalya.
A sample timeline
An illustration of how two trips often fit together for a single implant. Your dentist will set the real dates.
| When | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks before | UK | Send X-ray, receive provisional plan, agree dates |
| Trip one, day 1 to 2 | Antalya | Examination, 3D scan, final plan; extraction and implant placement |
| Trip one, last days | Antalya | Check of the surgery site, stitches if needed, aftercare instructions |
| The following months | UK | Healing; soft diet at first, then normal eating as advised; cleaning around the site |
| Trip two | Antalya | Check, abutment, scan or impression, crown fitted, bite adjusted |
| After trip two | UK | Regular check-ups and hygiene visits |
Looking after the implant between trips
- Follow the clinic's written instructions on cleaning and diet exactly.
- Avoid chewing hard food on the implant side until the dentist says otherwise.
- If you smoke, ask the clinic about stopping; smoking is widely known to affect healing around implants.
- Keep the clinic informed if you notice swelling, pain that gets worse rather than better, a bad taste or anything loose.
- Keep your temporary tooth or denture clean, and do not press it hard onto the healing area.
- Keep the implant details from trip one somewhere safe.
Seeing your UK dentist in between
It is sensible to stay registered with a UK dentist. They can check your other teeth and gums and help if something urgent happens. Tell them you have an implant healing and give them the details. Ask the Antalya clinic beforehand what a UK dentist can do without affecting your guarantee, such as routine check-ups and cleaning. For finding an NHS dentist, see the NHS dentists page.
If the timetable slips
Life happens: illness, family events, flight changes. If you cannot make the second trip on the planned date, tell the clinic as early as you can. A short delay is not usually a problem for a healed implant, but ask the clinic what it advises for your case, and whether any temporary tooth needs attention in the meantime.
Comparing clinics for two-trip treatment
Because you will travel twice, practical points matter more: whether the package covers both visits, how far the clinic is from the airport and how clearly it explains the second stage. The implant ranking covers brands, guarantees and 3D planning; the area guide shows airport drive times for every clinic area; and the compare tool puts the facts side by side.
Why some people are offered a tooth on the same day
You may read about implants with a tooth fitted the same day, sometimes called immediate loading. In suitable cases, where the bone is good and the implant is very stable when placed, a dentist may fit a temporary tooth straight away. It is still a temporary: the final crown usually follows after healing. Whether it is possible depends on the scan and on how stable the implant is during surgery, so a clinic should not promise it before seeing you.
For full-arch treatment the idea is used more often: several implants joined together by a temporary bridge share the load, which is why many All-on-4 and All-on-6 patients leave the first trip with fixed teeth. See the full-arch ranking.
What the NHS says about implants in the UK
The NHS describes implants as a fixed alternative to removable dentures that can replace a single tooth or several, and notes that they are usually only available privately; NHS implants are rare and reserved for cases such as patients who cannot wear dentures after mouth cancer or an accident. It also notes that replacement parts take time to prepare. That is the same reason treatment in Antalya is spread over two visits. Source: NHS dental treatments.
Questions to ask before trip one
- How many months do you expect between my two trips?
- What will I wear in the gap, and is it included?
- What can I eat in the first weeks, and when can I chew normally?
- What should I do if the temporary tooth breaks while I am at home?
- Is the second trip priced now, including hotel nights?
Bringing the right things to trip two
Bring the written implant details from trip one, any photos you took of the area while it healed, notes of any problems, and your temporary tooth or denture. If a UK dentist saw you in between, bring a copy of their notes or X-rays.
Guarantees across two trips
Make sure the guarantee covers the final crown or bridge as well as the implant, and starts when the work is finished. Precious Dental's terms: implants with abutment, lifetime; crowns and bridges, 5 years. See the guarantee page.
Common questions
Why can't I have the crown on the same trip?
The implant needs to fuse with the bone before it can take biting forces. Loading it too early can stop it fusing.
How long between the two trips?
Usually a few months. Your dentist decides after surgery, depending on the bone, any graft and how the implant settles.
Will I have a gap while I wait?
You may have a temporary tooth or denture. For front teeth, ask the clinic what it will provide.
Do all implants need two trips?
Not always. In some cases a temporary tooth is fitted at once. Full-arch treatment often fits fixed temporary teeth on the first trip and the final bridge on the second.
What if I cannot travel twice?
Tell the clinic before you start. It may suggest a different plan, or you may be better treated closer to home.
