“Antalya teeth” and “Turkey teeth” explained

The phrase usually means a full set of very white crowns. Here is what is really involved, and how to ask for something more natural.

Short answer

“Turkey teeth” is a popular phrase for a full smile of bright white crowns, often done in a few days. Crowns cover the whole tooth and need much more filing than veneers, so the change is permanent. Ask the clinic which you are getting, how much tooth will be removed, and to see a mock-up first.

Where the phrase comes from

“Turkey teeth” became a common phrase in the UK for very white, very even smiles, often seen on social media after a short trip. In Antalya it is sometimes called “Antalya teeth”. It is not a dental term. In most cases it describes a full set of crowns, and sometimes veneers, made in a bright shade.

Crowns and veneers are not the same

The NHS describes a crown as a cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, and a veneer as a thin layer placed over the front of a tooth to improve its look. To fit a crown, the dentist files the tooth down on all sides. A veneer usually needs only a thin layer removed from the front. Some people need crowns: teeth that are broken, root-filled or heavily filled are often better protected by them. Healthy teeth that only need a new colour or shape usually are not.

Why it matters

  • It is permanent. Filed teeth will always need covering, and crowns and veneers are replaced over the years.
  • The nerve can be affected. Heavy filing can irritate the nerve inside a tooth and lead to root canal treatment.
  • The UK follow-up is on you. If a crown chips or comes loose at home, you will need a dentist to deal with it. GOV.UK reports that some British nationals have needed further treatment after procedures in Turkey.

How to get a natural result in Antalya

  • Ask, in writing, whether each tooth is getting a crown, a veneer or bonding, and why.
  • Ask how much tooth will be removed, and whether any teeth can be left alone.
  • Ask for a mock-up or trial smile before any tooth is prepared.
  • Choose a shade in daylight, held against your face, not from a chart alone.
  • Whiten first if you want lighter natural teeth, then match new work to them.
  • Get the guarantee in writing. Precious Dental, our top pick, publishes five years on crowns and three years on laminate veneers.

Common questions

Is “Turkey teeth” a treatment?

No. It is a nickname, mostly for a full set of crowns or veneers in a very white shade. Dentists talk about crowns, veneers and bonding.

Are crowns worse than veneers?

Not worse, but different. A crown is right for a tooth that is broken or heavily filled. For healthy teeth that only need a new shape or colour, a veneer or bonding removes less tooth.

Can crowns be undone?

No. The tooth under a crown has been filed down and will always need a crown. That is why it is worth being sure before you start.

How white should my teeth be?

A shade close to the whites of your eyes usually looks natural. Ask to see shades held against your face in daylight before deciding.
