Whitening before crowns or veneers: why the order matters

Crowns and veneers keep the colour they were made in. Natural teeth can be whitened. Get the order wrong and they will not match.

Short answer

Whitening only lightens natural teeth; it does not change crowns, veneers or implant teeth. If you want your remaining natural teeth lighter, whiten them first, let the shade settle, then have new crowns or veneers made to match. Ask the clinic to build this into the timetable.

Many smile plans in Antalya combine more than one treatment: a few crowns, some veneers, maybe an implant. Patients often ask for whiter teeth too. The order in which these happen makes a real difference to how the result looks.

The key fact

The NHS is clear that teeth whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth. It does not change crowns, veneers, dentures or implant teeth. Once a crown or veneer is made, its colour is fixed.

Why that matters for your plan

Suppose you have veneers made to match your natural teeth as they are now. Six months later you whiten the natural teeth. They lighten; the veneers do not. Now the veneers look darker than the teeth next to them.

The reverse is the usual advice: whiten first, then make the new teeth to match the lighter shade.

The usual sequence

  1. Check-up and cleaning. Whitening should only be done on healthy teeth and gums; the NHS says the dentist should check this first.
  2. Whitening of the natural teeth, in the clinic or with trays.
  3. A short wait while the shade settles.
  4. Shade matching, in good light, against your face.
  5. Crowns or veneers made and fitted to match.

Ask the clinic how it fits this into your trip. On a short visit, whitening often happens on the first days, before teeth are prepared.

When whitening is not needed

If every visible tooth is getting a crown or veneer, there are no natural teeth left on show to whiten, and the shade is simply chosen for the new teeth. Whitening may still help lower teeth that show when you speak.

Old fillings and bonding

Tooth-coloured fillings and composite bonding do not whiten either. After whitening, a filling on a front tooth may look darker than before. Ask whether any should be replaced once the new shade is set.

Choosing the right shade

The brightest shade on the chart is not always the best choice. A shade close to the whites of your eyes tends to look natural. Ask to see shade tabs held next to your face in daylight, and if possible a mock-up. See “Antalya teeth” explained.

Side effects to plan around

The NHS lists sensitivity to cold or sweet things, sore gums or throat and white patches on the gums as possible side effects of professional whitening. These usually pass quickly. If you are also having teeth prepared that week, tell the dentist if your teeth are sensitive.

Questions to ask the clinic

  • Will you whiten my natural teeth before matching the new ones?
  • How long will you wait between whitening and shade matching?
  • Which method: in-clinic, trays or both?
  • Will any old fillings need replacing to match?
  • Can I see the shade and a mock-up before teeth are prepared?

Guarantees

Whitening fades over time; the NHS says the effect may last around three years if you follow your dentist's advice. Precious Dental, our top pick, publishes a one-year guarantee on whitening, five years on crowns and three on laminate veneers. See its guarantee page.

A worked example

Take a patient planning four veneers on the upper front teeth. The upper canines and premolars, and all the lower teeth, will stay natural and show when they smile. The natural teeth are a little yellow, and the patient wants a lighter smile overall.

  1. Day 1: examination, cleaning, shade recorded, plan agreed.
  2. Day 1 or 2: in-clinic whitening of upper and lower natural teeth.
  3. Next days: the shade is checked again once it has settled.
  4. Then: the four teeth are prepared and the veneers made to the new, lighter shade.
  5. Last days: try-in in daylight, fitting and bite check.

If the veneers were made first and the teeth whitened later, the veneers would look darker than their neighbours.

Which treatments are affected

TreatmentChanges colour with whitening? What it means for planning

Zirconia crowns and bridgesNoMake them after the final shade is set
Composite bonding and fillingsNoMay need redoing after whitening
Implant crownsNoMatch to the final natural shade, often on the second trip
DenturesNoChoose the shade with the dentist

Based on NHS guidance that whitening only lightens natural teeth.

Whitening and sensitive teeth

If your teeth are already sensitive, or have exposed roots where the gums have shrunk back, tell the dentist before whitening. They may suggest a gentler approach, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth beforehand, or skipping whitening on certain teeth. Sensitivity after whitening usually settles, but it can make the days of tooth preparation more uncomfortable if they follow straight on.

How long the result lasts, and keeping it

The NHS says the effect of whitening may last around three years if you follow your dentist's advice. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking shorten it. Because your new crowns or veneers will not fade at the same rate, keeping the natural teeth bright helps the smile stay even. Ask the clinic whether it provides trays for occasional top-ups at home, and how to use them safely.

Whitening in the UK before you travel

Some patients whiten in the UK first and travel only for crowns or veneers. That can work, as long as you have it done by a registered dental professional, which the NHS advises, and you tell the Antalya clinic exactly what was done and when. The clinic will then match to your new shade. You can check UK dental professionals on the General Dental Council register.

Choosing a clinic for a combined plan

Look for a clinic that plans the whole case and explains the order of treatment in writing. Our veneer and crown ranking scores clinics on written guarantees, digital design, an on-site lab and published prices. For a plan that also includes implants, see combining implants, crowns and veneers.

Lower teeth are often forgotten

When people smile or talk, the lower front teeth often show. A plan that makes the upper teeth bright with veneers but leaves the lower teeth unwhitened can look uneven. Ask the dentist to look at your smile while you speak, not only in a still photo, and to consider whitening the lower teeth as part of the plan.

Shade tips for a natural look

  • Choose the shade in daylight, not only under clinic lights.
  • Hold the shade tab next to your face and look in a mirror from a normal distance.
  • Compare against the whites of your eyes; teeth much whiter than that often look artificial.
  • Bring a photo of a smile you like, and one of your own smile from a few years ago.
  • Ask to see a mock-up before teeth are prepared.

When whitening is not right for you

The NHS says whitening is not done for people with unhealthy teeth or gums, and is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you have gum disease or decay, these come first, and the dentist may suggest a different way to improve the colour.

Common questions

Can veneers be whitened later?

No. Whitening gel does not change the colour of porcelain, zirconia or composite veneers. If your natural teeth are whitened later, they may no longer match.

How long after whitening can a shade be matched?

Shade can shift for a short time after whitening, so many dentists wait before matching. Ask your dentist how long they want to wait for your case.

Will whitening make my old fillings stand out?

It can. Fillings do not whiten. Your dentist may suggest replacing visible front fillings after whitening.

Does whitening damage teeth?

Done by a dental professional, it can cause temporary sensitivity and sore gums. The NHS advises against salon or online kits.
